Review of The Godfather

Overall Rating
yeah alright, i can see where the acclaim is coming from. the directing and acting here is basically flawless. each actor is completely believable in their role as members of the corleone crime family. marlon brando might be a tad overhyped, but he's still great as this warm, kind of lovable little don of the family. i really like the characters and the conflict they face throughout the movie, it was a lot more engaging than i expected. two scenes i really like in particular that i think deserve mention are the hospital scene and the baptism of the baby intercutting with all the murders of the other new york dons. great ending, too. my biggest problem with this movie was the infamous runtime and the pacing. it doesn't drag horribly and never becomes this problem that overshadows the rest of the film, but maaaaan this movie is long. too long, i'd say. i don't know what exactly could be cut without detracting from the film's quality, but something's gotta go. this movie was three hours long, but i felt like i was watching it for four, maybe even five hours. it doesn't ruin the film, since that's four or five hours of an engaging and excellently made film, but it's a problem for me. this film, and i expect the same to be true of the next two films, is something you need to make a schedule around. not the best thing. overall, good but not as good as i saw the devil.
