What's Up, Tiger Lily?

woody allen's directorial debut is not really a woody allen picture. it is a japanese movie re-dubbed in english by allen and a few other actors. the new dialogue completely changes the story into (what else) comedy. does it work? not all of it. some of it is dated too but there is more than enough that does work and i promise in the hour and twenty minutes that you watch you will laugh out loud more than enough. the scenes with the lovin' spoonful are a waste and don't really work in the film. 65/100 read more

this is essentially a mst3k prototype. the jokes are inconsistent, though there are a couple genuine laugh lines. by only doing the jokes mostly over where there was originally dialogue, there is a lot of dead air, something mst3k would later remedy. it is a decent experiment and it works well enough to be generally entertaining over 80 minutes. i don't really get why it garners so much vitriol, there really isn't a whole lot hear to really hate, but i'm guessing it is mostly aimed at woody allen the person moreso than the creative behind this thing. read more
