this review will be short sentences that while disjointed hopefully form a whole a la the movie itself. this is the third time i have watched this film and it just gets better and better. poetry is a written art and poems don't come off well on screen but 8 1/2 is pure cinematic poetry. it is the equivalent of the best poems in the reaction it causes the audience. a film about filmmaking done in such a way that you can't look away. it's not always easy to follow and i admit i don't get everything (more on the third viewing) but boy is it fascinating to watch. marcello mastroianni is just read more

Frederico Fellini's masterwork 8 ½ is difficult to approach largely because of its reputation. Many critics also state that the film is so complex that it requires multiple viewings to understand, and this is likely to intimidate many viewers. Criterion called this "The greatest film about film ever made", and i tend to agree. It loves to linger on the conversations that make the movies we love and the creative process. It ask the same question from start to finish; What is film? It answers with confidence; The most collaborative art form. Fellini, Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, Scorsese, Aster, Eggars, Villeneuve.
