michel gondry and charlie kaufman make a great team. they both have this weird and wacky sensibility that gels together so well. so for a first film as director, gondry couldn't of chosen anyone better than kaufman to write the screenplay.
and what a screenplay it is. filled to the brim with sex, lunacy, out there moments and hilarity. it's about what makes us human, the nature of humanity, love, hate, the raw intensity of emotion. it's also about a girl who grows hair all over her body, a scientist who is training mice to have table manners and a man who as a baby was taken to the jungle and raised as an ape. it's also about sex, cheating and murder. it's also hilarious.
so hilarious it hurts. rhys ifans is brilliant as puff the apeman and will have you laughing from start to finish. tim robbins is hilarious as dr. bronfman who has so many issues that are so clear to see but misses them completely at his psychiatrist's office. patricia arquette is hilarious as the girl who hides her hair from her husband. miranda otto is hilarious as the young 'french' assistant. and then there is a young peter dinklage as frank.
it's not just the cast but the one liners, the mice, the visuals, the story, the ending, the strangeness that makes this film hilarious, unique, different and original. i had seen it once before and liked it but on this second viewing i liked it even more. it's filled to the brim with visuals that shout out gondry and his unique talent along with those visuals lends itself perfectly to this script. and although there are some deep issues addressed here there isn't much to be taken seriously. the whole film is basically one long (three long jokes) that get funnier and funnier as it plays out.
for his first feature gondry puts together a fine piece of work. a truly underrated piece of work. a magical and mystical and absurd piece of work. a piece of work filled with sex and nudity and perhaps in the end that's what the film is saying. that that is what human nature is: sex and orgasms and nothing else. perhaps?
