david lynch is one of those filmmakers that you are either on his wavelength or you are not. as a big fan of the strange and weird in cinema, i decidedly am. wild at heart has all the lynchian trademarks and surreal qualities that you would expect him to bring to his films (which makes the ones in which they are lessened even more fascinating). here he is mixing that style with a genre that i think it works very well for: a roadtrip movie. the surrealist touches and the insanity of some of the moments give the trip these characters are going on and, in turn, the film a spontaneous, never know what's going to happen next feeling. and i think that mix works wonderfully.
nicholas cage and laura dern anchor the movie with wonderfully over the top performances that, in the end, really add to the surreal quality and dreamlike progression of the film. and, i can't fail to mention the wonderfully bizarre and off the wall performance by willem dafoe, as bobby peru.
there's a lot of funny comedic moments in the film. it had me laughing way more than i thought it would. of course, lynch has always been very talented in deftly mixing very dark material with very funny humor to great effect. in the end, this film doesn't have the emotional center or impact of lynch's best work (i'm still not sure about the ending) but it is still very much worth watching if you have enjoyed any of his other work.
