when your sister-in-law's wife turns round and says "jacqueline has never seen jaws, can you believe that?". that's a cue to put it on immediately. thankfully it went well and she enjoyed herself. said that it looked dated. considering one of her favourite films is sister act, i didn't accept that as a serious review. read

an absolute classic and from what i recall spielberg's best film. tense, funny, emotional, scary and perfectly shot, edited, written and scored. pretty much a perfect movie. i will say there were times when the music felt a little to spielbergian (the happy zippy moments) but then i remembered that this is actually the first use of it and therefore it is more unique and original compared to basically 20 years of movies from spielberg and others that emulate it. also, this pg movie has gore, blood, violence, tits and even a 70's bush (easily seen in gloriously remastered hd). i say it every... read

i can confidently say i've finally experienced this as the classic it is... but i do have some new issues. for one i could do without the whimsical, spielbergian music near the end that's meant to emphasize the "romantic" nature of murdering animals who do not have the ability to even bear ill will. the shark in jaws is part of a power fantasy, and michelle made a really good point that there was no way of informing yourself to this reality pre-internet. then again they're still making evil shark movies so i don't know, people are stubborn and refuse to learn? i also don't love quint's uss... read

"This movie is stupid, it's been 40 mins and we haven't even seen the shark yet"
Jake Harper was right. Horrible movie only decent part was seeing the guy get eaten at the end. read

i don't know why, but i got the impression that there were two plots merged in the middle (one on land and the other on the ship). and although i felt the characters were slightly simplistic, everything else was very good, especially in the technical aspect creating the tense atmosphere (soundtrack and photography more than anything else). it took advantage of what it had at its disposal very well. 9.4/10 read

part of obligatory october of horror yeah so i hadn't actually seen this until today. that's mostly because, like most 70s and 80s pop culture, i expected to dislike it. what i hadn't expected were its general quality, the political aspects (seriously, why does the first half of this work so well as an analogy for the pandemic response?), and just how much it feels like a hitchcock film. there's the obvious main criticism that i really can't ignore, though: the horrible shark slander. a generally peaceful creature that is unfairly portrayed as a violent killer. the effects really can't be read

I feel like I'd seen so many comments over the years about how bad and fake the shark looks that, well, I was prepared for it to look bad.
I was NOT prepared for it to look great, much less convincing and scary! read

Watching this on IMAX is incomparable to seeing it at home. A spectacular big screen experience, from the very first scene to the last. All the build up on Amity Island is great, the beachfront politics, the character introductions, getting to know this small town as the shark is terrorising it; but the final stretch where it's just Brody, Hooper and Quint on the Orca is just golden. The singing, the drinking, the showing off of scars, all fantastic, to say nothing of the reason they're there: the game of cat and mouse with a giant killer shark. Jaws manages to show us so much in the space of... read
