Review of Independence Day

i'd forgotten just how damned cheesy this film was. i was 14 when this came out and it blew me away. i'd never seen anything on this scale before. at the time it, briefly, shoved jurassic park out of my favourite film list. 17 years later and it hasn't aged that badly. the miniature effects are the ones that stand the test of time best but overall it looks nice. i watched this on a vhs back in the day and was less observant of vfx than i am now. the script though; fuck me it's ham fisted. man alive, nobody speaks like that except in films like this. i don't care if it's the end of the world and we're facing nigh on certain death. if somebody gets up and does a bill pullman style speech then i'm just going to be laughing too hard to fight back. the story also seems to rely on far too many coincidences to navigate through to the end. oh so the one person who deciphered the code just happened to be married to the president's aide and so on. i don't watch these films to believe but i do want some plausibility and thought shown. it would have been much more interesting to show him trying to get his discovery across without actually having an "in". incidentally; don't they celebrate a bit quick? yeah, the mothership is gone and the others have crashed but are they assuming there's no survivors? that's stupid. plus, did it seem like they were suggesting the rest of the world was waiting until the usa came up with an answer? "the american's are ordering an offensive!" "about bloody time." no it's fucking not you twats! i refuse to believe you all sat there twanging your respective genitals around until the fucking yanks morsed you up. another thing; is it any wonder will smith didn't get into nasa? they show him flying 3 times and he crash lands 2 of those. a 66.6% failure rate. yeah; you ain't no astronaut boy.
