No idea why people love it so much...

Review of Men in Black

Wanted to play some video games based on this series, so... thought that I may as well catch up with the movies. Especially since they're making the new one with the actors I like. Anyway, the first Men in Black is the only movie I saw back in the days. It was kind of a big thing back then and everybody talked about it. I remember having it on VHS, but the thing is, I never really liked it. Even though the idea was kind of nice, it felt a lot like Fresh Prince: FBI Edition. Will's acting, situations, jokes... all that felt exactly like in Will's acting debut. And since The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was kind of a long show, everything here feels... old. Imagine Will becoming an alien hunter and that will be it. The entire movie feels extremely generic and since the story is very basic, there's pretty much no reason to bother. I can't say I hated the movie back in the days, but I've never bothered to re-watch it until now. Just because of how meh it was. Even the formula that was heavily popularized by Eddie Murphy feels old and boring here. It was so meh that I didn't even bother to check the sequel. Does it feel better now, many years since the original release? Well... kind of. I mean, vintage feeling adds a bit of fun and it was kind of nice to sit back and remember 1997, but the movie itself still feels laughably generic and predictable. As the result, it's pretty boring to watch. Men in Black is something you can watch while doing some other stuff. Need a movie to watch while cooking? It'll do. As a proper entertainment? Nah, still meh.

P.S.As for 4K, this movie is one of those cases when we get the remasters mostly because those are easy to make. Just re-scan the film in 4K and here you go - more money. It was kind of fun to experience it in UHD, especially since it feels like we had VHS tapes only yesterday, but all in all it isn't something I'd like to add to my collection. Glad I've rented it.
