while the original holds up more than you'd think, this one does not in the least. i bought all three so i could watch them in 4k but i knew going in that this one would be a chore. i really just wanted to watch 1 and 3 but i can't not watch an entire trilogy.
this should be studied in school for textbook "studio interference". the behind the scenes stories are fascinating from sonnefeld and company. with almost double the budget of the original, the studio had much more say in the goings on and it shows. a nauseating amount of product placement, a script that felt hacked to pieces, and a too tight 80-minute runtime once you remove the credits. tommy lee jones is trying to have fun where he can, will smith's natural charisma can only carry a movie so far, the very talented rosario dawson had nothing to go on and could have been replaced by a cardboard cut out and the movie would have been none the wiser. don't get me started on the shameless use of lara flynn boyle's body and giving her the most ridiculous lines to compensate. oh yeah, johnny knoxville is there because we all lost our minds in 2002.
you can't call this a cash grab since it came out so long after the original but it feels like one. they didn't exactly strike while the iron was hot and it felt like they went to a shelf and said: "oh yeah *blows the dust off the original script* we have this ip."
the third one is by no means an instant classic or can even hold a candle to the original but it is a far cry better than this.
