manhattan was pretty good, definitey my favorite allen of the three ive seen. with this, im starting to at least like woody allens romantic and nostalgic style of writing/directing. it worked here when it didnt in midnight in paris. the musics great, the black and white is beautiful, and there are some real pretty shots in this movie. its also very funny, woody allens a surprisingly great comedic actor. when it comes to dramatic acting, which thankfully there isnt much, hes pretty bad though. theres just one scene that comes to mind where he just has this dumb look on his face while trying to look sad, and its just laughable. like i said though, this movie is mostly comedic, so its not that big a problem.
its weird, cause i just finished praising allens performance but at the same time, i kind of hate it. its complicated, i swear im not actively trying to make dumb conflicting statements here. so, his comedic stuff is good (which in retrospect is probably just due to the writing as oppposed to stuff like comedic timing and what not). but just the way he delivers lines is just so grating. h-he, uh, he kinda talks like this a little too, um, a little much you know? and um, and it gets — oh it gets very repetitive, and it r-really just grinds my gears, you know? its, its really almost l-like allen just, uh, really did not rehearse his lines very well, and it uh, sort of detracts, from the — from the, uh, impact that some of these, and theyre terrific lines, believe me, but you know, but uh, the impact is j-just sort of lost. a-a-and not just uh, dramatic impact, which is hardly there, but also the — the comedic impact as, as well.
if those last couple sentences were a little hard to read, yeah thats the whole movie in a nutshell. of course, im exaggerating a teeny bit for comedic effect, but its seriously like that most of the movie. it never got so bad that the film became unwatchable but in every scene without fail, there was this niggling little annoyance that never let go. as for another negative, i reaaally dont like the conversation that plays out between tracy and isaac at the end of the film. no spoilers, but it really painted allens character in a bad light, as a selfish, narcissistic asshole who learned nothing throughout the whole movie. it left a sour taste in my mouth. aside from that, though, the film was for the most part very enjoyable. very funny, at least.
heres looking forward to annie hall, which i hear is his masterpiece.
