film #26 of hoop-tober 2.0the omen is iconic for a very good reason. richard donner film about the antichrist's early years is one of the better thrillers of its era, never quite going into full-bore horror but still containing plenty of thrills and an menacing, slow burn of dread throughout. donner keeps a tight rein on the film, but not so tight as to keep it from going where it needs to in order to bring david seltzer's well-plotted story to life.
the film is certainly elevated by its cast; gregory peck, david warner, lee remick, billie whitelaw and leo mckern all bring their considerable talents to bear here. even young harvey spencer stephens is good; he's obviously not incredibly nuanced considering his young age at the time, but he manages to deliver some incredibly unease-inducing stares and glares. the score is deservedly famous, winning an oscar for jerry goldsmith's ominous work. while it may not be the most terrifying film ever, the omen stands as a very strong example of what supernatural thrillers can achieve.
