failure everything about this movie is total failure. well, maybe colors are camera work are good, but i do not care much about that. you can fap about it all you want, but it means nothing for me, when every other aspect of the movie is underwhelming. they are meant to enhance whats already good, so shit and enhance shit are all the same, after all. so let's just contiue the talk about the important stuff. plot? it is a typical detective story. some maniac did shit and now here are some random detective who want to catch that guy. and in some cases, the movie is playing out like any other generic detective story - it is extremely slow and dull. there is nothing else, besides mystery box (that is not good enough, because it is only meaningful in the final scenes), that may pick your interest, as it even lacks events. but, in some other cases, it is worse than generic detective stories, as it basically involves close to zero detective stuff. they just used something about library and that's it. they were so bad that villain had to caught himself. oh, and let's not forget that they discovered the villain with just that library and they almost caught them. only problem was the convenience, that the villain was not in his house and was just coming back. bad writing 101. so, yeah, it fails as both, story and detective. characters? they are as generic as it gets. there is some contrast, that you basically can find in the half of the any other stories - active inexperience (child) and passive experience (oldman). yeah, everyone is boring and grounded. they have a family, and job and... that's basically it. nothing interesting about them. even worse, that they are constaltly getting rewritten. there is an arc, where freeman's character (yeah, they are so forgettable that i can't even recall their names) is whining about how he won't pitt's character to do the thing, and in the next scene does not give shit, like everyone else. there is a wife of pitt's character, that asks freeman's character what to do, she got two options and guess what, she did fucking neither. also, boss who said that he won't give the damned case to the blondie, and in the next scene he does not give a shit and etc. hell, they do not even have resolutions, because they either die (with unfinished arc's), or we do not know how their lives will continue. and one more important thing - only one character is emotional, so it is pretty dry to watch. villain? well, you may argue whether he was right or wrong, but the thing is, that he is presented as a psychopath. while also being one of the most pretentious and edgy villains i have ever seen. imagine whining about world being tolerant to the sins and evil. imagine wanting to do... god knows what... by just killing few random people. yeah, that would sure change the world. yeah, the world is bad, let's just kill everyone and everything, that will solve everything. also, he has no motive whatsoever. just killing people in gory ways and trying to justify himself by having some monologue or whatever. he is also not fleshed-out, as we do not know what the fuck is he doing outside of the crimes. while also not having a backdrop, to tell us, how did he end up like that. twist? it has one twist in the end, that exist just to exploit the emotions out of the audience in a cheap way, by using some edgy stuff like, having a dead wife and an unborn child in a box or something like that. it is also extremely predictable. first things first, only emotional guy here is the protagonist. guess who also is at the brink of the death, when villain refuses to kill, without any given reason? the protagonist. oh, who would have thought. so... yeah, the movie lacks both novelty and subtlety, characters are too grounded to be interesting and inconsistent, the villain is an edgelord, in a slow and dull plot, which ends up without resolution and sense of achievement. but i liked the illegal trick that protagonists used in order to fight crime and the dilema in the end. giving it anything higher than 3/10 is equal to overrating it.
