Review of JFK

film #12 in operation: rewatch my blu-rays i havent seen in a long time true story: in high school, i was fairly obsessed with the kennedy assassination. this was just after when jfk came out and while i can't remember the first time i saw the film, i can't imagine that there wasn't a correlation even if it was only the publicity that the film had received. whatever the reason, it is safe to say that oliver stone's film had a massive effect on who i was during my formative years. a couple of decades removed from that point, i can also safely say that jfk is a good film, if not quite a great one. stone's film, which examines the the trial brought by new orleans da jim garrison against clay shaw for involvement in the kennedy assassination, is an odd sort of beast. on one hand, it wants to be an activist documentary and lay out the case for a conspiracy in the '60s-defining act. on the other hand, it wants to be a feature film examining how one man can make a difference if he fights for justice, "though the heavens fall." the film doesn't quite serve both masters as well as it would like; a lot of the dialogue is either exposition arguing garrison's theories or southern cliches like "one pristine bullet? that dog don't hunt!" and "none of their testimony is gonna hold up in court, chief. hell all three of them have reputations as low as crocodile piss." it doesn't matter if this dialogue comes from actual quotes or figures of speech or not; they feel cliched and that's the point. thile the script has its problems though, stone and his cast do not. stone is masterful at blending real-life, film footage, recreated footage and more together and an all-star cast shines, particularly kevin costner and sissy spacek. costner has always been an actor to me who does great with good dialogue but just can't save sketchy lines. we see both of that here, as some of the early scenes fall a bit flat but good christ, that courtroom monologue. jfk isn't the greatest legal drama, even of the 1990s, but it is a compelling one and one well worth watching.
