on some general atmospheric levels, it kind of works. there are a bunch of interesting visuals that give you something to look at even when you have no idea what is going on. and i had absolutely no idea what was going on. was paul the good guy? he was giving off supervillain origin story vibes, but almost everyone else was playing the bad guy too. about halfway through i realized that i was no longer actually listening to the dialogue because it was all so weird and confusing i just gave up on it and was only watching for the emotion. the voiceovers were dumb and unnecessary, it felt like an... read

no hot takes from me here, dune isn't a movie that adheres to a distinct vision, and despite it featuring a bunch of his regulars (jack nance with that constant "fish in the percolator" expression) i had a hard time even seeing david lynch's involvement. in theory this coulda woulda shoulda been a 5-star movie (cf. jodorowsky's dune) but in effect it's so snoozy and all that asmr-adr doesn't help. visually it's all pretty cool, even though they do a poor job of translating that into the storytelling which makes the first half kind of a slog. so yeah, keep some snacks around and polish that... read
