i originally rated this film 65/100 and i will post that review in the next few weeks or so but i slightly amended it to a slightly higher ranking after i just rewatched it.
i wasn't looking forward to watching it again. the only reason i did was because i am working my way through tim burton's filmography and this was next. i was hesitant as i did not enjoy it that much last time (when i had just watched the original 5 films).
well i still don't think this film is great it was a little better than i remember it. it's a somewhat novel reworking of the central idea with some stellar make-up sets and locations. sometimes it's a little too dark to see though. another amazing thing in this film is the music. superb!!
but it also fails in a lot of ways. some pretty crappy dialogue. a pretty bad script. only a handful of actors, led by the awesome and unrecognizable tim roth, that can actually be called good (paul giamatti is really good too. and an ending that just plain sucks.
i loved this film in 2001 (well really liked), i did not think it was anywhere near as good in 2012 and in 2015 i thought it was a tad better. what's mainly missing (other than a better script) is tim burton's magic. sure he directed this but other than one shot in the entire film i feel like this could of been directed by anybody. where is the zany humour or the weird aesthetic? not here it isn't.
there is no charm, no magic, nothing unique in this entire picture. it is very pedestrian and that is something that doesn't bode well far a) a planet of the apes film or b) a tim burton film. this is by far burton's worst film to date and also the 2nd worst planet of the apes film out of 8.
i did enjoy it this third time watching it though. does that count for something?
