the big sleep is extremely noir; it really leans in to all of the genre archetypes. the plot itself is a little weak and the way it is told is very muddled and hard to follow. there is definitely an emphasis on maintaining the tone of the film over telling the story. the vibe they establish is strong enough that the film is able to work despite its subpar plot. humphrey bogart is strong as philip marlowe, who he plays basically the same as sam spade. lauren bacall is still finding her footing as an actress and would grow into stronger performances, though she had sultry down right off the read

stylistically impressive, but not sure even the sharpest of moviegoers could tell you what exactly is going on. read

The plot got a little too convoluted but the dialogue was fantastic and Bogart's 'ugly but sexy' thing is maybe at its peak here. read

Bogart is effortlessly cool and has such amazing chemistry with Lauren Bacall, all their scenes are so great with the cat and mouse playful banter they have with each other.
Honestly, Bogart's scenes with everyone in this movie are just top tier fun, my favorite being a short conversation with a girl working at a bookstore, it's only a few mins long, but it really was around the time his character was really taking shape and you could see the other layers about him.
It's so interesting that I'm watching this because last year I watched The Long Goodbye and was introduced to Philip Marlowe... read

I still haven't seen a lot of Bogart's films to date but decided on one of his better known ones, in which he again plays a private investigator but this time in the fictitious one in the books in Philip Marlowe. He is asked to investigate a wealthy man's daughter but ends up getting too involved leading to murder, blackmail and love. Bogart is very good as is Lauren Bacall as his love interest. Thought it dragged a bit in places but it was ok. Interested in seeing Robert Mitchums version which came out many years later. read

The Big Sleep
Roger Ebert
June 22, 1997
Two of the names mentioned most often in Howard Hawks' "The Big Sleep" (1946) are Owen Taylor and Sean Regan. One is the chauffeur for the wealthy Sternwood family. The other is an Irishman hired by old Gen. Sternwood "to do his drinking for him." Neither is ever seen alive; Regan has disappeared mysteriously before the movie begins, and Taylor's body is hauled from the Pacific after his Packard runs off a pier. Were they murdered? And does it even matter, since there are five other murders in the film?
One of the best-known of all Hollywood... read

First of all, this movie felt like gibberish to me and I couldn't follow the mystery at all. Second, I've overdosed hardcore on film noir thanks to 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. So much so that they all blend into each other and feel exactly the same. Even the actors are the same. It's much like the superhero fatigue people feel nowadays, I imagine. I just can't wait to get to the point in my book where they're out of style (I don't know if that isn't until the 60s, 70s or what).
Despite all my gripes, I can respect this as probably a great adaptation of a Raymond Chandler book (I... read
