beautiful in its brutal honesty. almost equal parts hilarious and depressing, but tragedy takes the edge by an inch. definitely chaplin's best character and story. i keep rewatching those last five minutes because damn. chaplin pulls off the desperation of the barber perfectly - and with so much emotion. the silent man can talk! read

probably the funniest movie you'll ever watch about the jewish experience in nazi germany. chaplin may be remembered to most people nowadays as having basically a singular character, and it's true, many of his notable films featured him as this sort of constantly down-on-his-luck everyman named simply "the tramp." having written the tramp character an ending in his previous film, modern times, chaplin sort of reincarnates him here as a jewish barber who patriotically signs up to defend his country, tomania. it's an obvious satire of germany and the first world war, the parallels becoming more... read

A controversial film when it was first released, but now it is viewed as a classic. And even today, this film is viewed as a great film and a must see if your interested in film history. Chaplins portrail of Hitler, at the time was controversial and offensive, now it's considered to be one of those films that is a cult classic. read

The classic for this week was one of Charlie Chaplin's best. I have now seen all his popular movies but this was the first time when I actually heard him talk, not sure if he was putting on any particular British accent but it sounded quite strange, maybe just cause I haven't heard him before. In this he sends up Adolf Hitler quite hilariously, strangely enough it was apparently one of Hitlers favorites, probably didn't see the resemblance. The movie is well done and visually beautiful. worth a look read

In 1938, Charles Chaplin deposited with the Library of Congress a script for a film to be called The Dictator, and told the press it was a project in which he would play a double role. He clearly had Hitler in mind, and a headline in the English newspaper the Daily Mail read, “Chaplin (and Moustache) to Satirise Dictators”—presumably, Mussolini was in the larger plan somewhere. Chaplin shot the movie during 1939 and showed an almost final version to friends in March 1940. The Great Dictator, as it was now called, opened in New York in October 1940 and ran for fifteen weeks, in spite of a... read
