Rififi

there are moments in rififi that moments feel unreal because of how good they are. that's what defines this film. moments of transcendence that surpass the actual experience o the film as a whole. rififi clearly works in the genre that it so heavily influenced, operating with much of the same structure and three act format that came to define movies like these for decades to come (just so this format could be played with and subverted in recent years) and it uses this structure really well in telling this heist movie. and the heist sequence (which takes up a very long chunk of the movie) is... read more

the heist itself is an incredible sequence. it maintains tension throughout without wearing the audience out. it is also quite early in the film as in the second half it seamlessly transitions from a heist film into a pretty good noir. i'm not sure about the moralizing ending that felt very much a product of the hays code despite being made outside the jurisdiction of the code, but it didn't diminish my enjoyment of the film. read more

Наверное когда фильм вышел он смотрелся отлично и свежо, но сейчас конечно история выглядит уже клишированной и заезженно, но тем не менее качественно прописанной. Да и олдскульная актерская игра и какофония на саундтреке конечно портят всю картину. Однако сцена с ограблением от и до сделана очень круто. read more

awesome french film noir/heist film. the heist itself was so brilliantly directed and edited. the influence this had on oceans eleven is really apparent. the ending was pulled off greatly due to the editing. however good the editing was in the heist and the end sequence, there were instances of bad editing that hurt it. recommended. read more

For this week's classic I decided on Rififi a French heist movie from 1955, Rififi is supposed to mean A Rumble amongst men which I didn't think there was a lot of. It's not got a lot of action but the story is where it excels. At one point in the movie there is no dialogue or music for about half an hour and it was just the actions of the perpetrators of the heist that the audience watches. Cinematography of the Paris streets in the 50s us really well done also. Watched as part of IMDBs Top 250 movies. Highly recommended read more
