campy campy campy first scene is strong and effective. first twist is also strong and effective. every character and actor is great (with the exception of one). this is especially true for tom cruise who, if you couldn't already tell by his producer credit, has such a dedication to the role that not many actors have. the vault scene is extraordinary and is surely to be a part of cinema history. scenes flow together so well (for the most part), that's it's hard not to get engaged. my main criticisms are with the second half of the film. the second "twist" kind of makes no sense. the ethan and... read more

when this movie came out in theatres i did not expect it to be one of the top franchises to exist all these years later. did anybody? i remember seeing it at a midnight show (i miss midnight shows) and enjoying the film a lot but i was disappointed with it. why? because i was expecting a balls to wall action film (like it's sequels) and what i got was more of a spy thriller with some action. interestingly enough when i saw the film ronin i expected a spy thriller with some action and i got a balls to the wall action film. basically these two films gave me the opposite feelings i thought i read more

i have fond memories of watching this with my dad as a young kid and being confused as hell. i love that this is a spy thriller and not like a generic action film or the mess that was the second one. dont get me wrong, i love what the franchise has become (3 on). but im very content with its beginnings. read more

re-watched this for the first time in many years, and i think it was the first time i was sure i understood the whole plot. and it's actually not really that difficult, so i gave a lot of thought to why this movie has the reputation of being so incomprehensible... i think it's helpful to rewind the clock a bit and realize that this was essentially creating a new super-spy, before bourne, before the reboot of bond. it was a soft sequel to a tv series that ended 30 years earlier, that more than half the audience would be only vaguely familiar with. so they basically wanted to blow the whole read more

This (and the second one, which I haven't re-watched yet), aren't that great...the series definitely got better starting with 3. But this movie has not aged well. I don't mean like, in any offensive ways. It just feels old. It doesn't even feel "90s" like other 90s action movies. I mean, the technology is kind of 90s, but the rest of the movie just somehow feels old. If it had come out in the 80s, I wouldn't have been surprised. I don't know. That was just a rant. But this is supposedly "cerebral" and "makes you think." It doesn't make me think too much. It's just meh. read more

A very solid movie, though out-shined by most of the following movies, I still adore this one. The more subtle approach it takes in comparison to the subsequent films I appreciate, the intense use of quiet, especially in the most well known scene, is masterful. I had never watched a Mission Impossible movie prior to this but this was an excellent start. read more
