the talented mr. ripley - scrumptious darkness (9.5/10)
the thing about psychological thriller is that most often they are neither psychologically enthralling nor thrilling. the talented mr. ripley checks both of those boxes.
in this movie every character is important, every event is important, and everything you think is null and void. very few movie can make me root for the villain, but here i do. i don't feel guilty for doing so, rather i feel a strange catharsis. this movie is so powerful that it can turn your guilt into joy.
anthony minghella took heavy inspiration from hitchcock, and he pulled it off with style. gabriel yared makes this movie with his apropos score, with not a single missing beat. the source material is already excellent, somehow minghella made it even better.
there are some plot hole for this film (hence the 0.5 deduction), but you can easily overlook them. even movies like godfather & shawshank redemption has plot hole, and they are not judged for their holes.
jude law and gwyneth paltrow probably delivered their performance of the career. matt damon, with his stoic acting, portrayed the character of tom ripley to absolute perfection.
and this movie has one of the best '90s monologue - "it's better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody."
riveting, superbly structured with perfect score, pulse pounding. psychological thrillers do not get better than this.
