it is a fairly middle of the road biopic. it tells the story of frida kahlo's life in broad strokes, but rarely looks into what drives her. often she seems to be taking a backseat in her own life story as the film focuses heavily on diego rivera and then briefly on leon trotsky. there isn't much emphasis on her artwork or its impact, instead looking almost entirely on her sexual relationships, which in my opinion is the less interesting story. salma hayek is more good than great as frida, capturing the look, but not really exploring the motivations or emotions. alfred molina and geoffrey rush... read more

having just come back from mexico and gone to a frida museum there, i decided the time was right to dive into this biopic. it turns out that that was perfect, as the film is probably best viewed possessing a decent amount of knowledge of kahlos life. its true that it is somewhat of a conventional biopic in that we start with frida as a college student and follow her through some major events of her life up to her death. on the other hand, the film is not very interested in weaving a narrative that establishes why one choice led to the next. its also not so interested in showing the evolution... read more
