i honestly think this film got short shrift when it came out. brandon routh was a fantastic clark/kal-el and i'd like to have seen him in a sequel. despite enjoying the film i could happily have lost the whole son storyline. i don't think it added anything. lois having moved on is a great story in itself. it didn't need the extra baggage. i wish this film had been better received on release as superman is one of my favourite comic book characters and i'm nervous about the prospect of a zack snyder version. i'd love to have seen where bryan singer took a sequel. read more

erasing the existence of superman iii and iv, bryan singer returns to donner's films and creates a direct sequel to parts i and ii forming a complete trilogy. forget the nay sayers and the haters for if you are a fan of i and ii then this movie is for you. it's got the same feel as those movies, the same tone and the same epic structure. spacey channels hackman perfectly and routh as sups channels reeve just as well, especially as clark kent. the effects are phenomenal, the cinematography is glorious, the action spectacular and the story engaging. some people have a problem with sups picking... read more

a strange and curious piece of anti-nostalgia that succeeds in reminding us how great the original few movies are, if only because i'd rather be watching them instead. the movie is canonically set after superman ii, but like... how far after? superman returns obviously isn't a movie set in the 70's or 80's. it looks just like every other mid-aughts, overproduced, comic book "extravaganza". there's flat screen tv's, cell phones, internet, and other modern trappings. yet all of this stuff is woefully at odds with the insistently throwback tone of the movie. clark kent hasn't left the fifties.... read more

This might be my favorite Superman film and it's not even very good. Maybe Superman just isn't for me. I haven't seen IV: The Quest for Peace, so maybe that will change everything! read more
