i've seen this film numerous times on television and every time i loved it. it's like a courtroom thriller mixed with horror. it's got a great over the top performance by al pacino and probably keanu reeves best performance outside of bill and ted/parenthood (he plays the same role in both) until john wick. i just watched it again and while i still really liked it i did find it to be overlong. it could of been shaved down quite a bit. there was no reason for it to be 2 1/2 hours. some of the effects are great, some of them, while good at the time, haven't held up so well. other than that read more

as an exercise in 90's excess, the devil's advocate is a winner- and also a deliciously strange film. from the casting of keanu reeves, to the accent he speaks in, to the the bizarre and off-the-rails last act. it's all so damn odd. not always in the best ways, but at least it's consistently entertaining. the truly sad thing is, in the hands of say... adrian lyne, or ken russell (maybe even david fincher), this could've been an evergreen classic alongside the likes of repulsion and rosemary's baby. it's a shame then that one can only laugh at the ridiculous ending, because up until then, the... read more
