for a film that's almost 3 and a half hours long it sure kept my attention. i only took one break around the middle and the rest of the film managed to keep me engaged. i'm not exactly sure how - maybe it was pacing, maybe it was me just caring about the story - but it definitely captivated me. it's hard to talk about biopics like this, especially when they're about someone who is apparently considered controversial and you don't know much about the entire thing. on a technical level, malcom x is very very well made. the cinematography is good, the script is strong, and the acting is great.... read more

To think that I am watching this for the first time 30 years after it came out and is just as relevant now as when it came out. I think if I had watched this when I was younger, hell even in my 20s, I wouldn't have really understood the ramifications of everything Malcolm X when through and wanted. It's through wisdom and watching the stilted slow change of the world where I can now recognize fully what drove him to become who he became. I feel like so much of Malcolm's story during school in America just gets lost in the shuffle because he was an easy target, but the thing I really admire... read more

‘Malcolm X (PG-13) By Desson Howe Washington Post Staff Writer November 20, 1992 Malcolm X is a trigger for potentially volatile debate. Was he an influential or a peripheral black leader? Was he anti-white or was he leaning toward reconciliation between the races after his famous trip to Mecca? Was he a prophet or an articulate demagogue? Was he a political chameleon to everyone? Whatever the "answer," his legacy among young black Americans -- however translated, marketed or distorted -- is mythically unmistakable. Spike Lee's "Malcolm X," which stars Denzel Washington, speaks to... read more

The NOI for some reason still gets a lot of respect in the African-American community, despite the equal amount of respect for Malcolm X. This movie could've easily turned out propagandistic, but thankfully it is nuanced enough to outline the hypocrisies of the NOI and the threat they posed to powerful dissidents. I still think they murdered Malcolm, even if indirectly. Nevertheless, I wish the movie took a couple of minutes to explain the NOI's perversion of the Islamic theology. After all, their beliefs are so heretical, they can hardly even be called Islam. I also wish they showed more of... read more

This is a really good film with fantastic acting and cinematography. I was invested in the plot, although I personally disagree with the "fuck whites" message, even though he would turn around and not generalizing an entire race. The white girl at the college really stood out to me as a symbol for the "good" white people. Showcasing that what Malcolm actually believed at this point was wrong. The same with Islam being the only right religion. I mean, Islam's not the right religion but it's not the wrong one either. There isn't any right or wrong religion, if we are getting religious xD When... read more

It was nice to learn a bit about him. He just went about things in the wrong way.
