film 89 of obligatory october of horror ii
i just wanna start this review by saying that i'm ecstatic that i get to watch a haneke film for oooh this year.
and all of his trademark film elements are here - bleak as fuck tone, dark realism, and long static shots. those long shots work and fit extra will for benny's video simply due to the titular video filmed by the titular benny being a static home video.
and that video is the best and most effective static shot in this entire film. everything about it is just about perfectly made to unsettle and disturb: the way it unfolds, the acting (especially the screams), and the framing which actually manages to leave most of the gruesome content entirely off-screen and lets your mind fill in the blanks. that's honestly kind of genius and ends up being more chilling than any on-screen gore could be.
but with the haneke style comes the same caveat i give with almost all my reviews of his films: they may be great but you need some patience to really enjoy them.
if, however, you can handle 10 minute scenes with zero cuts or camera moves and you want your halloween movie to be something that's fucked up on a more human level, watch this.
