back in '96 i was at the mall with friends. we decided to see a movie. my pick was ether fargo or this one. i had heard fargo was good and this one had ben stiller in it. i was a huge fan of stiller from his show the ben stiller show. suffice to say we saw neither. a week later i convinced another friend to see it and boy am i glad we did.
there are lots of positives to that experience in the theatre that day. it cemented my love of (early) ben stiller, it made me an instant david o. russell fan, it was one of the funniest times i had yet had in the theatre, it made me a richard jenkins fan, it somewhat shaped me towards my love of cinema as it is now (more adult, although even that is questionable).
i have seen the film countless times since and it never fails to impress me. it never fails to make me laugh. it never fails to entertain me. so without hesitation i bought this movie for five bucks on dvd and caught up with it a mere two hours ago, for the first time in maybe 6 years?
and yes it still holds up. it is still hilarious and captivating and enjoyable. stiller is fantastic (in the comedic sense more so the acting one) as a neurotic looking for his birth parents. some of his reactions and mannerisms are priceless. arquette and leoni and brolin are great too. but the standouts here come from the likes of alda, tomlin, jenkins, segal and moore. all are not only undeniably hilarious but they also deliver oscar worthy performances.
the best thing i can say about this movie is that with a sharp script, talented director and superb cast the film stands out as one of the better films of 1996 and one of my favourites of that year as well as being one of my favourite comedies of all time.
the second best thing i can say is that (besides the fashion of stiller) the film hasn't aged a day. this film left a strong impression on me when i was only 17. seeing it again today i can see why.
