it has a wonderful twisting mystery that all clicks together perfectly. the acting performances from the trio of leads in crowe, spacey, and pearce are all outstanding and it is shocking that none of them received an oscar nom for this film. i have to imagine they wound up splitting votes, because they all are better than peter fonda in ulee's gold. kim basinger is outstanding and it occurred to me that this is one of the rare occasions where an actress is playing a character younger than herself. basinger was in her 40s, but the character of lynn bracken was probably around 30. hollywood read more

i recently started trying to catch up on all the 'cop' movies i'd never seen, and hot damn if this wasn't a perfect example of why. i love cop thrillers. and, i'm not really talking of the speed or die hard variety. i love hard boiled mysteries with twists, turns, and a good shootout or two. l.a. confidential delivers all the noir-y goods you could possibly want, and then some. i can't even adequately articulate how much i enjoyed this movie. it was like, superb cinematic comfort food. i love guy pearce, russell crowe and kevin spacey. lucky me then that they all shine here in their read more

Can't believe it took 26 years for me to get to this one. Kevin Spacey shines despite his personal demons. Spacey, Crowe and Pierce play cops I probably would have liked in more than one story. Great cast and kudos for not doing the typical thing of having the accused be "completely innocent, and did nothing" they were scum, something they'd be less inclined to portray today despite crime stats vindicating it. Definitely worth a watch despite my absolute confusion as to why anyone would want to housewife a ho. read more
