this is less a film and more an informercial on organ donation or a feature-length episode of a dull tv medical drama. a documentary on this subject with real-life people's faces to look at might have been stirring, but a pedestrian, inept narrative film with a few odd bits (the "loving" moment of a male doctor watching bird videos in his free time and expressing his desire to buy his dream bird -- not my word choice; clearly the concept of "adopt, don't shop" hadn't yet reached the sensitive french intelligentsia since this is a film that opens with a song whose lyrics, "i'll never understand what it means to be a man who is white 'cause he never has to fight," are clearly heard over the busy commotion of boys who are white and male -- is as idiotic as it sounds), a prescriptive score eager to pull at your heartstrings which instead makes you feel like a prisoner trapped inside a bad film as well as a few songs no doubt meant to reflect the writer-director's own excellent, eclectic taste in music, complete with emmanuelle seigner -- one of the more interesting actresses working today -- in autopilot mode and an entirely unrecognizable anne dorval in a decidedly lackluster, sanitized lesbian subplot. i can hardly believe this is a literary adaptation as it has almost nothing going on under the surface level. sorry not sorry i'm not in the mood for some sappy, haughty, empty, bourgeois shit. why is art a place to brag for these assholes?
