"in spite of what mike says now, it is my fault... i insisted that we weren't lost. i insisted that we keep going. i insisted that we walk south... i'm scared to close my eyes. i'm scared to open them. we're gonna die out here."
an exercise in chilling its audience with a suffocating visual perspective that rarely gives you a chance to familiarize yourself in the broad environment. never comes off as a cheap gimmick, but a look through our protagonists eyes' and the slow suffering and terror they have to endure. an ingenious approach, considering its shoestring budget restricts any clear view of a "witch," so it works to create its tension at concealing one, merely leaving us with an urban legend. above all else, its central focus is shifted from a conceivable creature to real-world isolation as our documentarians drift throughout the forest, constantly searching in desperation for solace.
this tight concept and script is only ever deflated by a repetitive bridge between the second and third acts. the intent is to strip down our characters' sanity to the bone, but with how rinse-and-repeat it is, it just comes off as one-note. luckily, the climax during the final 15 minutes save blair witch from leaving a bad taste in my mouth.
although tainted by a sporadic sequence of inefficiency, the blair witch project is a tour de force in creativity and tension that refuses to let an unstable budget curse the product. a horror classic that holds up.
