an eternally essential landmark in the horror genre, and actually not dated in terms of execution, but shallow and slim with its 70 minutes run time and the inclusion of multiple scenes with his friends, father and fiance. it's all made very clear, but it comes off as too perfunctory to build the atmosphere. no rating. some classics would just belong on a different scale. side note: m, also a 1931 movie, was brilliant. of all genres, i think horror might be the one where a classic being dated matters the most: the movie just isn't scary or unsettling at all; only being aware of its read

hooptober 666 #13 watched on universal blu-ray from the classic universal monsters set. so i was kinda disappointed by the bela lugosi dracula movie last year during hooptober, so i was kinda expecting this to be the same. but nope, this is a hell of lot better. it's actually great. frankenstein actually has a pretty strong visual style that works for me. boris karloff is great as the monster, and you can feel sympathy for him. i should check out james whale's other horror films. read

guys, do you actually know what happens in this movie? you just know the basics, right? mad scientist sews dead body parts together and creates monster. monster gets chased by villagers. villagers burn monster. ok, fine, but how this is all connected in the movie is frankly ridiculous. i can only imagine what audiences thought in 1931, but watching it today: this is not a good movie! it takes mary shelleys poignant meditation on the barrier between life and death (by the way, she is credited here as “mrs. percy b. shelley", her husbands name, because 1930s) and honestly makes a mockery of it.... read

part of obligatory october of horror here's my pick for a horror franchise to watch this october - one of the most classic classics. truth be told, i expected this to be a pretty boring watch. surely this was only appreciated in for its influence at the time. but for a film that's nearly 100 and a story that's over 200 years old, it was impressively great. and with a crisp runtime of only 70 minutes its pacing just didn't have time to drag. now, i don't really have any insightful new literary analysis of one of the most studies stories ever so i'll just point out some things i liked. first... read

the first, but definatly not the best of Universals Frankenstein movies, that honour goes to Bride of Frankenstein in my opinion. although its pace is not as slow as the 1931 Dracula, its still too slow for my tastes and probably will be for a lot of today's audiences read

Going into this a day after watching Dracula, I was aware that it's generally considered the better of the two movies, and also the best horror movie of the era. And I see why now: from a purely film-making standpoint, it's undoubtedly superior. Dracula still shows a lot of its stage play roots, and Frankenstein's cinematography and command of visual storytelling far outstrips it. It's also probably slightly better-paced, and if there aren't any performances to match Bela Lugosi's, Boris Karloff's monster, both moving and terrifying, comes pretty fucking close (at least some of the credit read

For this weeks classic I went to probably the earliest of the Frankenstein movies which has been made over and over again since. I liked this one as it brought a bit of depth to the monster but Colin Clive who played Dr Frankenstein I didn't find that convincing. The good part is at just over an hour its very east to watch. read

Deliciously haunting. Not so much scary as unsettling, but remarkably deliberate in how it unsettles. Karloff's subtle movements and mannerisms make every moment The Monster is on screen absolutely spellbinding. A classic tale somewhat summarised but superbly adapted for the big screen with good enough writing and directing to make it feel exciting to watch even 90 years later. read

I watched this with my 12 year old sister, here's a list of questions she asked:
Is this real? (during the very first scene where they warn the audience about the horrifying picture they're about to see)
What happened? Why did the lights go out? (when it transitions from Frankenstein's tower to Baron's house)
Did he die? (won't spoil, it's when a character is strangled)
Did she die? (another character died)
What happened, why does this movie jump from place to place?
Did he die? Why does everyone in this movie die so easily? In new movies sometimes people don't die even after taking a... read
