While I expected a Laurel&Hardy or Chaplin-like slapstick routine, the result was far less pleasing. The Marx Brothers infuse their film with such an overabundance of jokes, mostly dialogue-driven, that you won't have the chance to laugh. The joyful feeling I get from watching early comedies is completely gone and is replaced by the typical annoyance I get from watching clowns throw pies at one another. I do like puns. I do like satire. But too much is simply too much. read

film school drops 2018 week 6 - genre - musicals - the depression era (1933-1939) watched this on itunes. i'm not a big fan of these old hollywood comedies/musicals, but this wasn't too bad. there a ton of jokes and gags, and i'd say most of them don't hit with me, but a good amount did. but the high energy on the screen and its short runtime are definite positives. read

We have all 4 Marx brothers in this one. The usual slapstick humour and one liners come pretty fast here when the president declares war on an opposing country. I am not sure what the title refers to and I didn't know that this was a musical of sorts either. It's fairly funny at times with Groucho the standout as usual. The movie is very short at 68 mins so its a nice quick watch. read

Duck Soup (1933)

Updated 26 May 2004
War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing except for anarchic belly laughs in this subversive Marx Brothers outing in which Rufus T Firefly (Groucho Marx) leads Freedonia into a pointless conflict with a neighbouring state after he's called an upstart. Meanwhile, Chico and Harpo play a pair of spies sent to infiltrate Freedonia's regime. A subversive comedy that bulldozes everything in its path, Duck Soup's satire of war and nationhood may be borderline insane, but that only makes its distrust of pompous politics all... read
