film school drop outs – weekly challenge 2018 week 1 of 52 theme: actors - lillian gish - filmography or mary pickford "he ain't my dad." to start off the film school drop out challenge 2018, i had to pick a lillian gish or mary pickford movie. lillian gish plays rachel cooper here, who takes care of the children after they flee harry powell. she was excellent and i'd like to watch her other films in the future. i have to say, i'm glad i selected this film and now i need to pick up the criterion collection blu-ray of this. this up there with touch of evil and vertigo for... read

now called a classic, this one has some real magic to it. yes, given the era it was made in, it's pretty stagey in some places. you have to make allowances for several scenes of characters delivering speeches out towards the audience as if we were watching a play. and tonally, it's very uneven. but there are good stretches with some really haunting cinematography, and robert mitchum's iconic performance really anchors this thing. i was surprised to find this was the first and last film directed by veteran actor charles laughton. apparently it was a troubled production, with botched... read

Some films surpass the era in which they were created and become timeless. Sadly, The Night of the Hunter, at least for me, isn't one of them. Don't get me wrong, it's a good film, just not as good as I was lead to believe.
Robert Mitchum who plays a serial killer of children, is the definite highlight here but I never quite got the sense of menace from him that I would expect from such a character. The performance of Shelley Winters on the other hand feels very muddled. Her mannerisms and line delivery are floaty and odd and there are numerous scenes where she smiles at very inappropriate... read

For this week's classic I decided on what is arguably Robert Mitchums greatest performance. Beautifully filmed by director Charles Laughton Mitchum plays a man who married a widow only to try and find where her dead husband had hidden the proceeds of a robbery. Mitchum is supported by Shelley Winters and silent movie legend Lillian Gish who is also a standout here. Well worth a look read

'The Night Of The Hunter' is recognized by most critics and hard core film buffs as one of the most extraordinary movies ever made, but sadly it's still frequently overlooked by the many movie fans, probably because it's so difficult to categorize. Yes, it's a thriller but it's also a child's nightmare. A Noir but also a fable. Robert Mitchum gives one of his very best performances as Harry Powell, the charming but evil preacher with "love" tattooed on one hand, "hate" on the other. Powell is one of the most memorable screen villains of all time, and 'The Night Of The Hunter' is worth read
