this film is at its best when it's firing on all comedic cylinders and delivering that wonderfully juicy dialogue that makes this film so fun to watch. much of the credit for that goes to the lead actor, william powell. powell has the perfect delivery of this type of dialogue and his performance here is outstanding. even when the writing is not the best, powell has an earnestness and an innocence while still capturing the fast pace and witty quality of the words that are being said.
it helps that powell has a character that he can really sink his teeth into, acting wise. there is so much history that is insinuated but never really expounded upon that he can really play around with and quirks to his character that he can really have fun with. i think that this dynamic between the writing and the acting is fascinating and really elevates the film to a higher level than it would be at otherwise.
unfortunately, i don't think the mystery and murder aspect of the plot works well with the rest of the film. the film clearly holds no interest in the plot and doesn't really hold it as important. yet, as a macguffin, it isn't really that captivating and too much attention is paid to it when the film clearly doesn't care about it. it doesn't mesh well tonally or pacing wise for me. whenever the plot thickened (so to speak), i felt the film grind to a screeching halt and something felt really off in those moments.
luckily, there is plenty of great dialogue, acting, and some funny moments that make up for the problems that i had with the tone and pace. william powell alone is worth the price of admission but, unfortunately, outside of the central character there isn't much to find in this film. and what might be there isn't worth the effort to dredge out.
