when a movie opens with striking cinematography and a haunting score- it's usually a good sign. 30 days of night is no exception. while a good portion of the movie is the standard "what is going on?" to hide-and-survive stuff, the movie hammers home the confusion, paranoia, and isolation that help 30 days of night stand apart in its genre.
it's handling some genuinely terrifying material and it does so in a lean and to-the-point fashion. it's not interested in fashioning vampires as tragically romantic or hauntingly attractive. they're fast, primal, merciless, and bloodthirsty. their features are warped to just the right effect, making them seem inhuman enough to be visually unsettling. these vampires are scary just to look at, let alone watching them in action.
i enjoyed this one a lot, and felt it was probably one of the better vampire movies i've ever seen. it has unique ideas, and implements them in subtle but effective ways. the protagonists are grounded and affable, but never over- or underdeveloped. we know what we need to for the story to function smoothly and for it to build to a properly emotional climax.
glad i bought this outright. a worthy addition to my movie collection that looks absolutely stunning on blu-ray no less.
