this is either the third in a series or the second remake depending on how you look at it. i look it as a second remake. a remake that pales in comparison to the first two (and is way better than the next one). back in 1993 i saw this in the theatre and subsequently a few times over the next few years on television. i was 14 years to probably 18 years of age. each time i loved it and thought it was pretty damn good. suspenseful, original, a very sexy gabrielle anwar, fantastic effects and glorious cinematography, cut to 2012 and i am 33 and watching it on dvd for the first time in 15 years (ish). i am excited, stoked, happy; i push play and for the next 90 or so minutes my dreams are shot, my memories are altered, my happiness dissipates. it's not that this is a bad film, far from it, it's just that it is nowhere as near as good as i remembered it. it's still interesting, anwar is still super sexy (in a early 90's way), the effects are still pretty good and the camerawork is still solid. but the story isn't handled that well, and it kind of just ends. and when comparing it to the far superior '78 remake and the classic original there really isn't anything here that you need to see. i would and you would much rather watch the first two again. not to say it's a waste of time. 3 reasons to why it's not. first, anwar gets naked. second, the scene when meg tilly opens her mouth and does the alien scream made famous by donald sutherland is fantastically done (and forever burned into my brain).third, and most importantly, it's watchable (at least once). production design: 8 out of 10 cinematography: 8 out of 10 re-playability: 6 out of 10 originality: 6 out of 10 costumes: 8 out of 10 directing: 7 out of 10 editing: 6 out of 10 acting: 7 out of 10 music: 7 out of 10 script: 6 out of 10 69/100
