boy and cute dog
was expecting a below average, boring, disney-type film pandering to kids, but i was actually pleasantly surprised to enjoy this. the gorgeous shots were so crucial to my experience that i genuinely believe that i wouldn't have enjoyed the film without it. huge props to the cinematography by martin gschlacht. lead actor does a great job, and the set pieces and production design were so incredible that i was genuinely questioning whether it was filmed in a third-world country. ending is also hella cool.
the film would've really benefitted from being more chronological. it does a corny "one week earlier" segment when it really doesn't need to. the segment is about 20 minutes which really puts an anchor on the pacing. the film is also heavily cgi which is not what i expected at all. you'd think with it being set 20,000 years ago that it'd fit more for it to be practical, but it seems like they didn't even try to find an alternative to cg which was a disappointment. also didn't like that our hero couldn't do... something in the beginning of the film just to illustrate his character, which is fine, but he's able to do it 20 minutes later. that first scene could've easily been cut.
was an enjoyable experience, but i'm not quite sure if i'd give this another watch. if i do, it'd definetly be for gscacht's cinematography, which i'm hoping gets an oscar nomination.
