Hunter Killer

it's half a sub movie, half a special forces movie and doesn't execute either one very well. essentially if the 40th percentile versions of hunt for red october and lone survivor were fused into one movie, you've got hunter killer. the key to a good sub movie is the tension and claustrophobia of being in a metal tube under the ocean where you could die at any minute. that tension is never really achieved. instead you get a pretty dull action movie that has large parts on a submarine set. i would 100% believe it if you told me this movie was funded by the us navy. it was very rah-rah, america... read more

feels like a video game adaptation of a tom clancy inspired movie. it's predictable, derivative, but enjoyable like a junk food feast without a single name brand in sight. like american assassin, it's okay, but endearingly dad-like in that you can imagine someone's 50-something year old dad making an imdb account just to review the movie and explain how good it is. if i get more milage out of simplistic kids movies by watching them with my little brothers, then i suppose i get more milage out of these jingoistic potboilers by watching them with my dad. i can't help but like hunter killer, and... read more
