Seems, at least on a superficial level, to be trying much less than it's 2004 update to be off-kilter and screwball, and yet manages this so much more effectively. Alec Guiness is perfect as Professor Marcus, the quick witted, charismatic ring leader with a slightly ghoulish aura, the rest of the cast all nailing their oddball characters in tow. A fun crime comedy with plenty of quriky characters and just a hint of homage to classic noir. I can see what drew the Coens to attempting to remake this, but watching the original now gives me a newfound grudge against their efforts. read more
