boy was i excited to watch this movie. i just started the filmography of tim burton and first up was pee wee's big adventure, a film i had never seen before but was dying to do just that. and what a film it was. it was original, it was weird, it sure was no kids film. when i say weird by the way i mean really fucking weird. it's a strange world and pee wee is a strange person and the camerawork and sets and dream sequences and large marge are all very very weird and obscure. pee wee is a great character and burton is a great director and together they have probably made herman's finest hour. sure there are moments where acting isn't the greatest, some of the story elements don't work that well (very little) and it's unique oddness makes this film not for everybody but there is so much that works making this a great film. i mean a story about a manboy searching for his stolen bike that goes off in the directions that it does is a positive. the music by danny elfman is just amazing. the production values (most of them) are pretty solid. the direction is top notch. the editing paces the film quickly and at 90 minutes it never drags. and the humour is spot on. so funny at times, laugh out loud at other times, weird at a few other moments, and barely a misfire of a joke every once in a while. if you like burton at his weirdest you'll like this film. if you get pee wee herman's sense of humour then you will like this film. if you like burton at his weirdest and you get pee wee herman's sense of humour then you will love this film!!! i have to admit, i did think this would be a better (maybe that's the wrong word) film but it didn't leave me disappointed. its a great debut from burton, a great movie for pee wee and really a fun and (big) adventure for the audience. you'll laugh, you'll jump, you'll laugh harder and you'll never forget large marge. production design: 8 out of 10 cinematography: 8 out of 10 re-playability: 7 out of 10 originality: 9 out of 10 costumes: 8 out of 10 directing: 8 out of 10 editing: 8 out of 10 acting: 7 out of 10 music: 10 out of 10 script: 7 out of 10 80/100
