i haven't seen any of the other films in the franchise and felt like i was missing a lot of nods here and there but overall this was a solid popcorn heist caper. my only criticism would be that it was too straightforward from start to finish and it never felt as if the stakes were very high. i felt from the beginning that they were going to achieve their goal and it never felt truly threatened. it was a fabulous showcase for strong women, being smart and hot while they do cool crime stuff but beyond surface level it was fairly hollow. but that's ok, it was a fun heist movie. wasn't trying to... read more

this was essentially ocean's 12. they followed the formula soderbergh laid out in the ocean's trilogy very closely and the end result was an entirely enjoyable, if unexceptional ocean's movie. sandra bullock and cate blanchett are able to step into the george clooney and brad pitt's shoes well enough to make it work and the rest of the ensemble cast does their jobs. i just wish blanchett got a little bit more to do since i felt she was the one character that was a little underutilized. gary ross is doing his best soderbergh imitation. it doesn't completely work, but it works well enough. read more

Led by the late (?) Danny Ocean's sister, a team of con women meticulously plans and adventurously executes an elaborate jewel heist. The gender twist doesn't get in the way of fun but it doesn't even turn this entertainment machine into an epiphany: "Ocean's 8" is as pleasant a time-killer as they come and it fades from memory just as easily. Between Bullock and Blanchett effortlessly playing tough and cool, Hathaway as a self-centered model and Bonham-Carter as a fading fashion designer are the only ones actually being given characters they can sink their teeth into. read more

I have not seen the original Oceans movie with the famous rat pack but the remake and its sequels have just got progressively worse. Here we have the all female version which puts a nice spin on the story but the script for it was pretty lame. Despite a great cast the characters were not that likeable or even believable in their so called "criminal professions". All in all an average movie at the end of the day. read more
