man, this movie is a slog to get through. admittedly, prison escape movies aren't my favorite type of movie but papillon fails to do a few critical things that are important to make a film like this really succeed. unfortunately, because the movie relies on these aspects to explore the themes and evoke the emotional response that it wants to, these elements bury some solid performances by steve mcqueen and dustin hoffman in a fairly mediocre movie. simply put, there has to be something about the characters or the experience of the characters in prison for the audience to care if these two men... read more

This weeks classic I decided to visit 1973's "Papillon" which I have only seen bits and pieces of over the years. Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman are great in their roles with McQueen's role reminding me a lot of his Hilts character in one of my all time favourites "The Great Escape". The film did have a long running time and could of maybe been shortened by 15 - 20 mins. I understand that the film has been remade in 2017 but it will have a lot to try and live up to. read more
