Carlito's Way

brian de palma's strengths are on full display here. the buildup of tension, the careful camera work - at times tight, economical, focused, at times showy and expressive (that beginning!) - the action scenes as minutely staged as the fake billiard trick shot that precedes the first one. al pacino is amazing, and so is the writing for him. from the very start in the court room, there is both a showmanship and an ambiguity. while that was voluntary, gratuitous, and triumphant, we next see it in that bathroom scene, with carlito in the dark, trying to bluff his way out using his reputation. and... read more

there was, at least from my recollection, where sean penn was a great actor put wasn't fulfilling his promise. he has pretty much stuck as spicoli from fast times. well, with carlito's way all that changed. he is so good in this he became a legend of the silver screen. he is so good in this you don't even realize you are watching him (at least at the time of the film's release). but it isn't only penn that makes this one of brian de palma's best pictures, it is everything and everyone involved. luiz guzman kills it, john leguizamo kills it and penelope ann miller has never been better. and... read more

86/100 Роберт Дауни Мл. отлично сыграл Аль Пачину. А вообще, всё внимание конечно же крадет Шон Пенн, гениальный грим и персонаж, который потом спиздят Рокстар в Гта Вай Сити. В целом, до Скарфейса не дотягивает, но всё равно очень достойно. А возможно он и не должен тягаться с ним, так как совершено разные по настроению фильмы, а точнее Аль Пачино в них. Если в Лицо со Шрамом, он пытался построить империю и постепенно становился ебанушкой, то в Путь Карлито он наоборот хочет от этого уйти и съебать на покой, но прошлое не отпускает.
