film #7 of hooptober the 6th: the producers cutalena is a pleasant little surprise. based on a graphic novel i was not familiar with, daniel di grado's film is a somewhat predictable but well-shot tale of a girl who is being bullied at her new private school. fortunately (and unfortunately), she has a old friend that no one else seems to be aware of named josefine who has her back...in violent ways, of course. there's a lot about this story that follows well-worn tropes, but di grado takes the script from he adapted with kerstin gezelius and alexander onofri from kim w. anderson's book and puts everything together well enough that it's easy to go along for the ride, even knowing how things will go at most moments.
the horror of the story is less about josefine herself, and more about the treatment alena receives from the trio of bullies she's dealing with. with a talented cast filling the roles, this aspect feels real and raw, and it is unrelenting. molly nutley is particularly good as the lead antagonist filippa; her journey into unhinged is portrayed authentically and while she has her own things going in, her actions aren't excused. that's one of this film's better strengths; no one gets off easy from viewer judgment when they do wrong, whether the bullies, the adults who aren't handling things well or even alena herself. amalia holm is incredibly good in the lead role and has great chemistry with the rest of the cast, particularly felice jankell as her love interest fabienne. you won't be particularly surprised by how this turns out and the "twist" falls somewhat flat, but this is a decent enough thriller that is worth checking out.
