Review of Blue Thunder

here's a movie that i grew up watching on tv as a kid. seriously, this film was always on the television. since my mid to late teens though i had been yet to see it again. then, as per usual, as i was browsing the shelves at my local soon to not exist dvd shop i saw it for sale for five bucks. how could i say no. i mean memories of a fun action flick, roy scheider, malcolm mcdowell and john badham. how could i go wrong. well, i guess i could go wrong with trusting my memories of movies from when i was a child. doing it with this movie steered me wrong. not that it's a bad movie but as a a kid you miss the bad stuff and only see it as awesome. the great cast delivers in the film and the first half is a pretty solid action thriller set up with strong direction, strong editing, crisp photography and a sleek looking helicopter even to this day. it's the second half of the film that kind of falls apart and becomes derivative and ends up being a typical and very 80's action adventure. it's not boring by any means and you want to see the end but this film with its unique premise (for its time) really goes nowhere and never does anything that hasn't been done before. it ends up being a good cop versus bad cop chase movie (this time the chase is in helicopters). i like scheider, i like mcdowell, i like candy clark, i like daniel stern, i like action, i like thrillers, i like nudity. this movie has it all but just enough to entertain and not enough to make it memorable, unless you are a young kid that is. i watched this in 2013 and all i can remember is the stuff i remembered as that young kid that loved this movie. 70/100
