a number one scariest kid horror? i don't know what my problem with the gate was for the longest time. i remember checking it out years and years ago thinking it was poorly written, and made very little sense. it still has some issues, mostly in that "saying shitty things in the 80's was commonly accepted" kinda way, but the script is operating from a perspective of what's scary to a kid who's been left alone with his imagination in the dark, and it totally vibed with me this time... as in it even freaked me out a lil. those effects still hold up like gangbusters, too. read more

this would've been an easy favorite of mine as a tween, right around the time i had also discovered critters and gremlins. as a kid whose main internet usage was shitty flash games on ebaum's, i didn't really have anyone or anything (apart from my dad's choice contributions) introducing me to movies from yesteryear. movies like this would fly entirely under my radar unless i stumbled across it at blockbuster or hollywood video. now, as an adult, a lot of its potential impact has been blunted by the fact i've seen so many movies like this (so... many...), but nonetheless, it's a charming read more
