it's funny that these airport movies, other than the first one, are not about airports at all and about a single airplane... but i digress...
airport '77, while not as good as the first film, is a marked improvement over '75. better effects, better acting, better story, better everything. watching this movie today is like watching a cornucopia of 70's excess and style thrown at you from every which angle.
you have a cast of 70's stars (and legends while in the 70's) including christopher lee, lee grant, james stewart, and the amazing jack lemmon who really makes this picture work. then you have about 30 or so faces you will recognize but who's names you don't know. and then you have the returning george kennedy reprising his role from the first two films. here is so useless and pointless and does absolutely nothing but hey, it's fun to see him.
you have laser discs (back before laser discs were even released) and seventies hair and seventies dresses and seventies attitudes and seventies effects and literally everything you can think of from the seventies makes an appearance in this film.
you also have an exciting adventure, a disaster of epic proportions and a solid cast leading the way for thrills and chills and plenty of spills. unlike the last film this one actually has effects and chaos and crashing and unlike the last film this one is actually entertaining and fun and develops characters and has characters and a script and a story and unlike the last two pictures people actually die here. this film has stakes and they are epic.
sure this film is a little over the top, a little dated and a little bit too long but hell of all the airport movies this is probably the most fun. it may not be the best but (last one not withstanding as i have yet to watch it) this is probably my favourite. okay, fine the first one was pretty damn good but this comes close...
