film #6 in operation: rewatch my blu-rays i havent seen in a long time robin hood: men in tights is easily the most dated of mel brooks' parodies, but there's still a lot to entertain and amuse here. the film works by having fun with some of the best tropes and amidst all the arsenio hall woof-chants, tomahawk chops, fox/fax jokes and such there is some original and funny material. the cast really shines, particularly cary elwes as robin and roger rees as the sheriff of rottingham. good old-fashioned goofball laughs; nothing wrong with that. read more

coming back to revisit this classic of my childhood and wow a lot of the jokes are duds. thankfully there are still a good number of jokes that work and it moves at a brisk pace so we are rarely trapped in a long joke that goes nowhere. this is way closer to spaceballs than it is young frankenstein. it isn't a complete wash, but this is firmly lower tier mel brooks. the best gags are all things that brooks had used to success before in his other films, but the jokes still work. read more
