what happens when you take classic carpenter from the 80's, mix him with humour, aliens, a low budget, a classic score, endlessly quotable dialogue, action, a cast of carpenter regulars and a wrestler? why you get they live.
they live is a purposely made b-movie full of b-movie tropes and b-movie acting and b-movie effects. the only problem is john carpenter directed it and at this point he was so good at directing that it transcends it's b-movie roots and has become a genuine classic.
why a classic? well first off there is the amazing and long and just awesome fight to put on the sunglasses. don't know what i'm referring to? see the movie... then there is the whole concept of seeing is not believing and the political undertones behind it. again, see the movie to know more... then there is lines like 'i've come here to chew some bubblegum and kick some ass... and i'm all out of bubble gum'.
the effects, for a b-movie are great. simple yet effective and the sets and make-up just look awesome, even today in 2014. the music is another fantastic score by carpenter himself and the camera work is typically strong. then there is the acting. keith david is as usual awesome and roddy piper from the wwe is pretty fun too.
now that might be the biggest disappointment to this film. it's not really a disappointment (unless you think about it) but piper seems to be a kurt russell knock off. why isn't russell in this? why isn't russell and david teaming up for a thing reunion with carpenter? why? in the end, who cares cause this movie rocks.
endlessly watchable, they live is another masterful film by the great john carpenter and a final fitting film to his great run as a master of the cinema and a great final film for his run in the 80's. after this carpenter seemed to have lost his edge, making only one classic film in my opinion since this one (in the mouth of madness).
i love this movie. did i mention the sunglasses fight?
