hoop-tober 2.0: film 18
***********************************************************************
and so romero's original trilogy ends with day of the dead. and what an ending. literally, what an ending. what starts as a slow build (yet still a hell of an entertaining slow build) ends with all out carnage and grotesqueness that has rarely been equalled.
starting off in a helicopter (right where dawn of the dead ended) we are introduced to a new set of people in what is now months or years into the zombie outbreak. we've got the girl, the black guy and two others. some are nervous, some or strong as an ox, some are falling apart at the seems. then we meet the military men. all are crazy, all are less human than the zombies.
what romero does with this film is quite brilliant and unique. he takes the themes and issues brought up in his past dead films and fully realizes them here. he expands on the universe he created and plays with the ideas that these zombies or more human than we give them credit for.
he also expands on the gore and the effects and the sets and the locations and the budget. here he has created probably his best looking film. the zombies look the best they ever have (thanks michael jackson, john landis and thriller) and the gore is outright gross, disgusting and awesome.
the cast all delivers solid performances although they are very over the top, especially the character of rhodes. speaking of rhodes, he looks like if denis leary and jeffrey jones had a baby this is what it would look like. and if john hurt and john hawkes had a baby together he would look like jarlath conroy. then there is lori cardille who is tough and sexy all at the same time. she is romero's best written female character yet.
speaking of writing, it is the script that shines and makes this film work. the first film was in a house, the second in a mall, this one in a military base. it's got great quotable dialogue and an intriguing story that keeps you glued to the screen. and it's got a fantastic (right of the 80's) score that pulses with energy. put that all together with some lush cinematography that really captures the enclosed and beautifully done sets and you get a genre classic that is just as good today as it was back when it was released, if not better.
is this better than dawn of the dead? maybe not but it comes damn close. is it better than night of the living dead? maybe and if not it is just as good. all three films have there merits but this one i have to say gets better with every rewatch. i love it, i love lori cardille, i love rhodes, i love bub, i love it all. maybe i'll watch it again now.
