pinocchio doesn't shy away from its source material and delivers stunning, authentic visuals. since i'm very familiar with the fairy tale - which is one of my personal favorites, this film ended up not surprising me much in dramatic terms. but, just like tale of tales, it makes you want matteo garrone to direct as many fantasy book adaptations as possible. he's such a distinctive artist. bellissimo! read more

Penniless carpenter carves himself a wooden puppet son who runs from him to explore the world. Enumerating the movie adaptations of Collodi's classic tale would be a herculean task, but Garrone's very personal version definitely ranks among the most faithful and satisfying. Still pursuing an Italian way to fantasy five years after The Tale of Tales, "Pinocchio" is nevertheless plagued by a similar emotional detachment that only allows a mostly intellectual appreciation.
